Let God Lead The Way

Seeking God’s Direction for Your Marriage

Scripture Focus

“Then he prayed, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.'”Genesis 24:12

“As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey.”Genesis 24:27

Opening Vignette

Mark and Julie had narrowed their decision to two choices.

For months they had talked about relocating. The new opportunity offered more money, greater responsibility, and the possibility of a fresh start. On paper, almost everything seemed right.

  • They made lists.
  • They compared housing costs.
  • They talked with friends.
  • They considered schools, churches, finances, and what the move might mean for their family.

One evening Mark finally said, “I think we’ve analyzed this from every possible angle.”

Julie smiled.  “Maybe that’s the problem.”

Mark looked puzzled.

“We keep asking which option makes the most sense. Maybe we need to spend more time asking where God wants us.”

So, they did something simple.

They stopped planning for a few days and started praying.

The answer didn’t come dramatically. There was no voice from heaven and no miraculous sign. But over time, clarity came. Certain doors closed. Others opened. Their hearts became increasingly united.

Years later, Julie reflected, “The best part wasn’t that God showed us what to do. It was that we learned to seek Him together.”

That’s a lesson every marriage needs to learn.

Marriage Reality

Marriage is filled with decisions.

  • Where will we live?
  • How will we manage our money?
  • Should we change jobs?
  • How will we raise our children?
  • When should we retire?
  • How will we care for aging parents?

Some decisions are relatively simple. Others can change the direction of a family for years.

Our natural tendency is to gather information, weigh the options, make a decision—and then ask God to bless it.

But there is a better way.

Invite God into the decision before deciding where you want to go.

What This Kind of Love Really Is

Genesis 24 tells the beautiful story of how Isaac and Rebekah came together.

Abraham sends his trusted servant back to his homeland to find a wife for Isaac. The assignment is enormous. How could the servant possibly know which woman was right?

So before searching, he prays.

He asks God for guidance.

Then something remarkable happens.

Before he even finishes praying, Rebekah appears.

She demonstrates exactly the character the servant had asked God to reveal—kindness, generosity, initiative, and hospitality.

The servant’s response is significant.

He worships.

“The Lord has led me on the journey.”

He recognized that what appeared to be a series of ordinary circumstances was actually evidence of God’s providential direction.

That is an important lesson for marriage.

We often want God to give us a map.

God frequently gives us something better … His presence along the journey.

Seeking God’s direction doesn’t mean every decision will become obvious. Nor does it mean circumstances will always work out exactly as we expect.

It means husband and wife develop the habit of asking:

  • “Lord, what do You want?”
  • “Where are You leading us?”
  • “Would this decision honor You?”
  • “Are we willing to follow even if Your direction is different from what we prefer?”

There is something powerful about two people humbling themselves before God and acknowledging, “We don’t know everything, but we trust the One who does.”

Healthy marriages don’t simply make plans together.

They seek God together.

What Love Is Not

Seeking God’s direction does not mean refusing to think, plan, research, or seek wise counsel.

Faith is not passivity.

But neither should couples make decisions based solely on money, convenience, emotion, or opportunity.

Not every open door is God’s door. And not every closed door means God has abandoned us.

Love patiently seeks God’s wisdom rather than demanding that God endorse our preferences.

A Better Way Forward

Maybe your marriage is facing an important decision right now.

Before making another list, have another conversation … with God.

  • Pray individually.
  • Then pray together.
  • Ask God not merely to show you what to do, but to make you willing to do whatever He shows you.

Sometimes His greatest work in decision-making isn’t changing the circumstances.

It’s aligning two hearts with His.

And when the answer finally becomes clear, remember what Abraham’s servant understood:

“The Lord has led me on the journey.”

Prayer

Father, thank You that we do not have to navigate life or marriage alone. Forgive us for the times we make our plans and then simply ask  You to bless them.  Teach us instead to seek Your direction first. Give us wisdom for the decisions before us and patience when Your leading is not immediately clear. Unite our hearts around Your purposes and give us courage to follow wherever You lead.  May our marriage become a lifelong journey of trusting Your wisdom and following Your direction together. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Growing Together

Reflect: Looking back over our marriage, when can we clearly see that God was directing our path even though we may not have recognized it at the time?

Talk Together: When we face important decisions, what usually influences us most—circumstances, finances, emotions, other people’s opinions, or God’s direction? How could we become more intentional about seeking Him together?

Live It: Identify one decision you are currently facing. Before discussing possible solutions again, spend several days praying about it together. Ask one simple question: “Lord, what would You have us do?”

Take It with You

The strongest marriages don’t simply ask God to bless where they’re going; they ask God to lead them where He wants them to go.
