Opening Vignette
There was a time when Jason and Melissa couldn’t stop dreaming together.
They talked about their future…visualizing the home they would build, the family they hoped to raise, and the ministry they wanted to share. Their future felt full of possibility.
But somewhere along the way, life became harder than either of them expected.
A business failed. A diagnosis changed their plans. Years passed without the answers they had prayed for.
Slowly, their conversations shifted from hopeful anticipation to quiet resignation.
One evening, Melissa while looking at an old photo album from their first years of marriage said softly: “We used to laugh a lot.”
Jason smiled, though his eyes revealed the weight he carried, “I guess life happened.”
Several months later, after God unexpectedly opened a door they had long believed was closed, they found themselves sitting on the same back porch, laughing until tears filled their eyes.
The circumstances weren’t perfect.
But hope had returned.
Sometimes God doesn’t simply change our circumstances. He restores our ability to believe Him again.
Marriage Reality
Disappointment impacts how we perceive the future.
When prayers go unanswered and dreams remain unfulfilled, hope slowly gives way to skepticism. We stop expecting good things because defeat feels easier to manage than another broken expectation.
Many couples continue loving each other while quietly giving up hope that anything will ever change…the laughter disappears.
Not because they no longer care. But because they no longer expect God to surprise them.
What This Kind of Love Really Is
When three visitors announced that Sarah would have a son, her response was almost instinctive.
She laughed.
- It wasn’t the laughter of joy.
- It was the laughter of disbelief.
After years of waiting, countless disappointments, and decades of wondering, the promise simply seemed impossible.
Can we really blame her? Humanly speaking, everything about God’s promise defied reason. Yet God gently responded with a question that still echoes through Scripture:
“Is anything too difficult for the Lord?”
Months later, everything changed. The child God had promised was born.
And Sarah laughed again. This time, however, her laughter carried a different meaning. It was no longer the laughter of doubt. It was the laughter of delight.
The circumstances had changed…and so did her heart.
The same woman who once laughed because she couldn’t believe or imagine God fulfilling His promise…now laughed with the joy of holding the proof of His faithfulness!
Marriage often follows the same pattern. There are seasons when disappointment whispers, “Nothing can, or will, ever change.”
- Communication feels stuck.
- Trust seems impossible to rebuild.
- Affection grows distant.
- The future appears smaller than the past.
But our God specializes in writing new chapters after we believe the story is finished.
- He restores what seems beyond repair.
- He renews what appears exhausted.
- He breathes hope into places where discouragement has quietly settled.
Healthy marriages are not built on couples who never struggle to believe. They are built on couples who continue bringing their doubts to a God who remains faithful.
What Love Is Not
Love is not pretending disappointment doesn’t hurt.
It is not forcing optimism or ignoring painful realities.
But neither does love surrender to hopelessness.
It refuses to let today’s disappointment become tomorrow’s identity.
Love remembers that God’s ability is never limited by our circumstances.
A Better Way Forward
Perhaps there was a time when your marriage was filled with laughter, dreams, and joyful expectations. If those things seem distant today, don’t assume they are gone forever.
Ask God to restore more than your circumstances. Ask Him to restore your faith and hope in Him.
Pray for eyes that can once again see His faithfulness at work, even before you see the outcome.
The God who changed Sarah’s laughter from doubt to belief is still changing hearts today. He is able to replace cynicism with confidence, discouragement with expectation, and despair with joy.
Never underestimate what God can do in a marriage that refuses to stop believing Him.
Prayer
Father, there are seasons when disappointment makes hope difficult. Forgive us for the times we have doubted Your goodness or questioned Your timing. Just as You transformed Sarah’s laughter from disbelief into joy, restore hope within our marriage. Help us trust that nothing is too difficult for You. Renew our faith, strengthen our love, and teach us to look toward the future with confidence instead of fear. May our home once again be filled with the joy that comes from trusting a faithful God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
