Mother’s Day Thoughts

It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday, and we should all take some time to think about the profound and transforming influence our moms (or other significant mother figures) have had or are having on our lives. I want to challenge you to not only think of the little things she’s done, but to focus more on the bigger impact she’s made on your life. She’s probably been the best theology teacher you’ve ever had because she taught you all about God’s love. God created motherhood within the context of marriage. That lifelong commitment between one man and one woman that provides a safe and secure environment in which God wants us to conceive and raise our children. I believe that’s because God wants his children to feel safe and secure in his unconditional and unbreakable love for us. God wants children to experience the love and influence of both father and mother, because both of these parenting roles help our children learn about who God is and how He loves us. Your children will learn what unconditional love is at home. They will experience the discipline inside of love at home. They will feel the grace and forgiveness side of love at home. All of these are aspects of God’s love for us and are being taught to them by you…their moms and dads. Moms, you’ve been hard wired by God to instinctively love and nurture your children. Erich Fromm, a prominent developmental psychologist, says it this way…“A mother’s love is bliss, it’s peace. It need not be acquired, it need not be deserved. It’s a blessing.”

So as you get ready to sit down and write that card to your mom, stop and think. What is the love you’ve experienced from your mom taught you about God’s love for you?
