If you ever listen to the news, you’ve no doubt heard that the biblical concept of marriage, one man for one woman for life is under severe assault. That really shouldn’t surprise us. Today’s explosive attacks on marriage are driven by a sinister, supernatural plot that goes far beyond any cultural, organizational or political agendas. God’s plan for marriage came under attack right after he put man and woman together on Earth. And today’s frontal attack is launched by the same crafty serpent, that father of lies, the devil, whose goal is to redefine and impugn God’s foundational institution of marriage. The fact that our culture is here today is evidence of the effectiveness of our enemies in this plan. He has successfully compromised our society’s foundational belief in the existence of God and the authority of His Word, the Bible. Our adversary’s strategy has not changed. He still asking the question that caused Adam and Eve to doubt God’s love and ultimately undermine his authority…”Did God really say?” Unfortunately, many churches and Christians have grown complacent because we bought into the mindset that the Bible might not really be true truth. You know, Paul warned the secularized Church of Corinth with these words in II Corinthians 11:3, “But I’m afraid that as the serpent deceived even by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”
Satan is relentlessly attacking the foundational principles of God’s love and authority. Since God instituted marriage, the devil has strategically undermined the authority of Scripture with His evolutionary and scientific ideas, which has caused many a generation to discard biblical authority. Satan understands that if we can’t trust the Bible when it speaks of origins, we have no reason to trust it when it teaches us about morality, marriage, or even salvation. So how do we contend with today’s onslaught against biblical marriage? The same way Jesus did when he was asked about it in Matthew 19. He quoted the Bible, Genesis 1:27 and 2:24, to be exact, as his authority. He answered the question, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female and said, therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.” Today’s cultural clash over marriage is clearly a battle over authority. Our challenge as Christ followers is to either acknowledge the Bible as God’s Word and our ultimate authority, or to arbitrarily follow man’s word. I strongly urge all of us to be like Jesus so that we can lovingly and authoritatively and uncompromisingly say that marriage is truly between one man and one woman for life because the God who created marriage designed it that way in His word.
