Foundation Check

I’m sure you desire to build your marriage upon the rock, so when the storms come, and we know they will, your marriage will stand. So, before couples start working on some of the cracks in the ceilingholes in the wall, or the sticking doors and windows in their marriage, we encourage them to do a foundation inspection to see what they’re really building their marriages on.

Unconfessed sin will undermine any marriage relationships founded on anything but the rock and are likely to crumble if undealt with. Sin is like a chronic disease. If it goes unattended, it will manifest itself in your life in dangerous ways. It’ll leave a trail of broken and strained relationships. It gives footholds for the devil to use to accuse and abuse you. It brings about fears and doubts about the security of your present marriage. “If we did something to break up a previous one, why can’t it happen in this one?” Feelings of guilt and anxiety will burden you. And Psalm 32, tells us that even physical pain and distress could be a result of unconfessed sin. But the greatest consequence is the fact that your fellowship with God is broken and you don’t have access to the divine power needed to create the marriage God wants you to have and to the blessings you want you to enjoy.

So, are there any undealt with sin issues incorporated into your marriage’s foundation? Sex before marriage, abortion, adultery, divorce, addiction, rebellion, dishonesty, or deception? If you’ve not dealt with these things, your marriage is being built on sand and the cure is to confess the sins with a promise from God that if we confess our sin, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sin, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. That’s I John 1:9.

What you do with your sin is up to you individually and as a couple. But so are the consequences. You can know the pain and heartache as well as the broken fellowship with God because of unconfessed sin. Or you can experience the peace, forgiveness, joy and God’s love surrounding you. Which will you choose?
